The project

This installation provides the hydraulic power connection between the powerpacks and one of MENCK’s large hydraulic piling hammers. Hydrauvision has been building powerpacks for these applications for many years. With this new winch spread, we have further expanded our contribution to the complete hydraulic system.

The total scope of supply comprises two of these winch spreads, each consisting of two large Hydraulic Hose Winches and a separate Air/Umbilical Winch. The two Hydraulic Hose Winches handle the hydraulic supply and return flow to and from the hydraulic piling hammer. The winch spread is currently being deployed for offshore foundation installation activities at the Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farm.

Our approach

The winch spread for MENCK consists of two large Hydraulic Hose Winches and a separate Air/Umbilical Winch. The two hydraulic winches handle the supply and return flow of hydraulic oil between the powerpacks and the piling hammer. The system is capable of transporting an impressive 7,200 liters of hydraulic oil per minute through a specially designed hose bundle.

During operation, the two Hydraulic Hose Winches are stacked on top of each other. Each winch has capacity for approximately 120 meters of hose bundle and is equipped with its own integrated Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU). A specially developed spooling device distributes the hose bundle evenly and in a controlled manner across the drum, while maintaining continuous tension on the bundle during payout.

For the supply of air and the electrical and data connections, Hydrauvision developed a separate Air/Umbilical Winch. This unit is fully integrated into a 20 ft container and has capacity for 200 meters of air/umbilical bundle.

Hydrauvision also developed the control system and software. The three winches can be operated individually or controlled in a combined and synchronized configuration, both locally and via a Remote Control Unit. This makes the complete winch spread a fully integrated system supporting the operation of MENCK’s offshore foundation piling hammers.

From engineering to offshore commissioning

An impressive project in which Hydrauvision supported the customer from engineering through to delivery and commissioning. Mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and automation engineering all came together in a single installation, followed by production, assembly, testing, FAT and ultimately service support.
