The Project
RWE, together with its partner Norges Bank Investment Management, is delivering the Thor Offshore Wind Farm in the Danish North Sea. This wind farm will be one of Denmark’s largest offshore renewable energy projects, contributing to a greener future. During construction, multiple secondary steel components must be installed on the monopile foundations, including an internal cassette, boat landing ladder and external working platform.
To perform these installations safely and efficiently, TWD engineered several advanced Secondary Steel Installation Tools (SSITs), namely:
- Hawkeye – Tugger Lifting Tool
- ICIT – Internal Cassette Installation Tool
- BLIT – Boat Landing Installation Tool
- EWPIT – External Working Platform Installation Tool
Hydrauvision supported the realization of all tools by delivering a wide range of hydraulic, control and drive systems.
Our Approach
For the Hawkeye system – fabricated by De Meyer – Hydrauvision supplied key hydraulic components. We designed and delivered a dedicated battery pack and hydraulic power unit. Furthermore, our team installed the required cylinders, hydraulic hoses, piping, motors and gearbox. This tool enables the lifting and rotating of the other SSITs with precision and safety.
We also developed a comprehensive control cabinet to operate the installation tools. Using a state-of-the-art wireless camera system, operators can monitor and steer the entire process with maximum visibility and control.
For the ICIT, BLIT and EWPIT tools – fabricated by Rometal – Hydrauvision provided all drive and control technology. Each tool plays a specific role:
- EWPIT aligns and positions the concrete working platform onto the monopile.
- ICIT handles the installation of the internal cassette inside the monopile, using a guide frame and three winches designed by Hydrauvision. The internal cassette ensures connection of the high-voltage cables to the wind turbine.
- BLIT is used to install the boat landing structure onto the monopile, facilitating safe access for crew transfer vessels (CTVs).
Through strong cooperation with RWE, TWD, De Meyer and Rometal, Hydrauvision proudly contributes to the success of the Thor Offshore Wind Farm. Our technical know-how and custom hydraulic solutions help ensure safe, efficient and future-ready offshore installations.
