Controlled horizontal movement of heavy loads
Hydrauvision designs and supplies advanced skidding systems for the horizontal movement of heavy or oversized loads. These systems are applied in environments where lifting equipment such as cranes is impractical or unavailable, for example due to limited space, extreme weight, or offshore conditions. Through integrated hydraulics, control systems, and engineering expertise, we enable safe, accurate, and repeatable movement of critical equipment.
What is a skidding system?
A skidding system is a mechanical solution used to move heavy loads horizontally via a guided slide system. Movement is enabled by hydraulic push-pull cylinders, which deliver controlled force to reposition the load with millimetre accuracy. Skidding is often preferred where vertical lifting is either risky, inefficient, or impossible.
Skidding systems are commonly used for:
- Transporting and positioning monopile handling tools on board installation vessels
- Moving heavy steel structures or modules on platforms or construction sites
- Temporary or permanent relocation of equipment in areas with limited crane access
Our expertise in skidding systems
Hydrauvision has extensive experience in delivering skidding systems for offshore, industrial, and heavy construction applications. In a recent project, we supplied the drive and control system for a skidding setup used to position a monopile handling tool on a vessel. The tool needed to be accurately aligned with the monopile prior to installation.
Our scope of work included:
- Engineering of the drive concept
- Delivery of hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and power unit
- Development of a tailored control cabinet (HMI/PLC)
- Integration with deck rails and safety protocols
- On-site installation and functional testing
